Around Malia

There’s plenty to do without going far. Within half an hour of Malia you’ll find peaceful villages, cozy fishing harbors, bigger resort towns, and even Crete’s capital. Whether you rent a scooter, car, or just hop on a local bus, there’s a lot to see around Malia.

Stalis (Stalida)

Stalis sits right next to Malia – you can literally walk there along the beach. It’s Malia’s calmer sister: soft sand, cafés, families, and a slower rhythm. The two towns almost merge together, but Stalis keeps a gentler soul.

It’s the perfect change of pace when you’ve had enough of nightlife but still want everything within flip-flop distance.

Hersonissos

Ten minutes west, Hersonissos is a bigger and more developed resort with something for everyone – long promenades, shops, bars, and the island’s main waterparks. It’s busier, with a small marina and plenty of restaurants along the seafront.

Great for a short day out or an evening stroll with more options than Malia can fit on one street.

Sissi

Drive ten minutes east and you reach Sissi –  a postcard-perfect fishing village wrapped around a natural harbor. Taverns spill right to the water’s edge, serving seafood, meze, and local wine as boats rock quietly in front of you.

It’s peaceful, romantic, and feels a world away from the party strip. Go for dinner, stay for sunset.

Up in the Hills!

Above Malia, winding roads lead into the hills where life slows down.

Mochos is famous for its big central square lined with taverns and live Greek music nights – the kind of place where everyone ends up clapping along by dessert. Krasi is smaller but equally charming, known for its ancient plane tree and cool mountain air. Further west, the Hersonissos VillagesKoutouloufari, Piskopiano, and Old Hersonissos – offer similar vibes: cobbled lanes, traditional food, and balcony views of the sea below.

Heraklion & Knossos

About forty minutes away, Crete’s capital mixes city energy with ancient history. Wander through Heraklion’s market streets, visit the Archaeological Museum, and then head a few kilometers inland to Knossos Palace — legendary home of King Minos and the Minotaur myth.

It’s one of the island’s most famous sights and makes an easy day trip by bus or rental car.

Agios Nikolaos & Voulisma Beach

Head east for roughly forty-five minutes to reach Agios Nikolaos, a beautiful coastal town built around a small lake and marina. Cafés, boutique shops, and relaxed restaurants give it an easy charm.

Just a few minutes beyond lies Voulisma Beach, a stretch of bright turquoise water often ranked among Crete’s best. Come early, stay late, and you’ll understand why.

Back in Malia, the fun doesn’t stop –  whether you want beaches, food, or adventure.
